Executive Director

The Board of Directors is seeking an individual with a passion for children and education to continue the strong momentum of this museum.

The executive director (ED) leads the museum’s continuing growth including its role as a vital community partner. The ED is charged with fulfilling the museum’s mission and implementing the Board of Directors’ strategic plan. The ED is the primary voice in promoting the museum’s vision and taking the lead role in all fundraising efforts to support the museum’s mission and its unique learning environment to the community and potential supporters. The Board of Directors seeks an innovative and collaborative executive director to lead the Museum into its next chapter. The ideal candidate must have the knowledge and experience necessary to secure funding from individual donors and grants. In addition, the candidate must have the ability to work with community partnerships and to foster innovation in a non-profit, educational children’s museum setting.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to working in a non-profit organization and driving the vision of a growing museum
  • Proven leadership, operational, and relationship management experience
  • Successful experience in fundraising, including seeking private and corporate donations, implementing events, and grant writing
  • Strong operational skills including planning, organizational, administrative, supervisory, and budget management
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of private, public, and non-profit organizations
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in non-profit management, program and exhibit development and management, operational oversight, or a similar combination of progressive responsibilities where knowledge and qualifications can be inferred.
  • Bachelor or Masters degree in education, science, museum studies or other related field preferred but not required if comparable skills and experience are demonstrated.

Job Responsibilities

Fundraising and Finances:

  • Energize the Rutland County community to financially support and engage with WKM as it grows to a new level
  • Provide leadership for and execute annual fundraising strategy, including campaigns, events while building and maintaining major donor relationships
  • Strengthen and diversify the organizations funding sources
  • Identify and apply for grants and maintain records of grants received
  • Oversee the maintenance of donor database
  • Develop and manage the annual budget
  • Provide excellent financial stewardship for all the museum’s resources

Leadership and Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and execute, in partnership with the Board of Directors, the next level strategic and fundraising plans and long-range vision
  • Represent and promote WKM at community strategic endeavors, including working with the city of Rutland and other civic and government organizations, businesses and other community organizations
  • Ensure ongoing quality program and exhibit development
  • Ensure the use of effective systems to track and measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents
  • Maintain and develop vital community partnerships
  • Guide the development of the board of directors
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of nonprofit development, museum leadership, and museum operations

Operations & Staffing:

  • Provide oversight of all museum operations and supervision of staff and volunteers
  • Ensure staff training and professional development
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of the museum’s physical and exhibit spaces to ensure high-quality experience for visitors
  • Oversee completion of all reports
  • Communicate effectively to the board of directors the monthly and annual finance and attendance reports

Salary
Full-time job with compensation commensurate with experience
