Have a “One”derfeet Year!

What does it mean to have a “One”derfeet Year?

Congratulations, Mom/Dad/Caregiver! You made it through your first year of parenthood and now have a 1 year old!

In the next year, your child will be changing and growing at an incredible pace. They will be reaching all kinds of milestones like walking and talking, and their curiosity will have them getting into just about everything.

“Have a ‘One’derfeet Year!” is a program to support you and your toddler during this year of learning. Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum is working with agencies and organizations from across Rutland County to provide you with resources, tools, events and opportunities to help you understand your child’s physical, mental, and emotional changes. What is Developmental Screening?

Developmental screening is a process for observing and tracking and your child’s developmental milestones. Skills such as taking a first step, smiling for the first time, and waving “bye-bye” are called developmental milestones. Developmental milestones are the physical, mental and emotional things most children can do by a certain age.

Screening helps to identify the areas where your child is currently experiencing rapid learning, gaining new skills, or may need additional support. Even if your child is developing on track with their milestones, learning to observe how your child behaves and grows over time will help you nurture and encourage their healthy development.

Milestones are different for each age range and cover four categories of a child's development:

  • Cognitive means thinking, reasoning, problem solving and understanding.

  • Communication and language involve making sounds, learning words and responding to noise and words.

  • Social and emotional includes interactions with other kids, developing friendships and group play.

  • Motor coordination includes gross motor skills such as sitting up, standing and crawling, and fine motor skills like holding a crayon and drawing

FAQs about “Have a ‘One’derfeet Year? *

We have other children. Can they be added to our membership?

  • Yes, you can add as many additional people to your membership as you’d like at a cost of $25 per person ($10 per person if you receive WIC or SNAP benefits). Wonderfeet front desk staff can assist with adding additional children (or adults) to your free membership.

Do I have to do the ASQ screening at Wonderfeet?

  • No. You can do the screening online, at Wonderfeet with our Family Liaison, with your childcare provider, or with another agency. Wonderfeet will check that you have completed an ASQ screening before processing your membership enrollment.

My child had a different screening done. Do I need to do another one?

  • The Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) is the developmental screening tool that is recommended by Help Me Grow VT and Building Bright Futures. They recommend that 100% of Vermont’s children receive at least one screening before they turn 3. Using one standardized assessment gives all the organizations working to support your child a common language to work with.

What happens if the ASQ screening identifies an area of need in my child?

  • Everyone has skills that they are working on, even grown-ups! It can feel scary to hear that your child may be missing a milestone, but we’re here to help. If an area of need is identified, the Wonderfeet Family Liaison will work with you to determine if a referral is needed to Children’s Integrated Services (CIS) or another partner program that will work with you to create a plan. We will also recommend that you make a plan to share these results with your medical provider.

The Wonderfeet Family Liaison can also support your family by giving you additional ideas for play-based activities that will support your child’s learning. You’ll also have access to resources, meet-ups and workshops for parents too, to support your needs while you are helping your child. Through it all, you will be part of a community of parents and caregivers that are also passionate about supporting children’s growth and understand the joys & frustrations of raising toddlers!

We already have a Wonderfeet Membership. Can I get a refund on my current membership?

  • If your family already has an active Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum membership, we will start your free year of membership when your current membership expires. If you have more than three family members on your membership you will be asked to pay for those additional members at the $25/$10 membership rate.

My child had their birthday a few months ago. Can we still sign up?

  • Yes, your family is eligible anytime before your child turns 2, as long as all the other criteria have been met.

What happens at the end of our free membership?

  • At the end of your 12 month membership, you will be asked to renew your membership. Membership costs are based on the number of people in your family. We offer discounted memberships for military families (active or retired) and any family that receives WIC or SNAP nutritional benefits from the State of Vermont.
